47 Top Dividend Stocks for April 2012

For investors searching for dividend yield, the amount of dividends paid is as important as whether the dividend can be sustained or even grown over time. For a value investor, it makes sense to look at dividend paying stocks as these stocks have a way of realizing value with each dividend payment. For this edition of the Best Dividend Stocks screen, I have selected the following 47 stocks that offer nice dividend yields and the company has a recent history of growing the dividend. Additionally, the payout ratio is low implying the dividends can be easily sustained in the future.

Note from the author: I will be producing these screens every month so you will be able to get regularly updated list on a monthly basis. In addition to dividend screens, I post many other screens that you can browse on the site. You can of course receive all these screens in your email as soon as they are published.

47 seems too many to say “top” to me. I think narrowing this list down to 10 would make it more useful. Saying this is a screen of stocks meeting certain criteria for div rate, div increase and payout ratio would be fine. I think sometimes we are too quick to accept less than great titles because we see how common that is. I still think you could do better – since the content you have, in general is so much better than most of what is out there.

I also find the popup that blocks the site very annoying. I guess you are balancing your benefit versus annoying users. I wish you chose to not annoying us. Again I understand lots of sites choose to hassle users.

The content you provide is great.

    John,

Thanks for being a regular reader and the feedback. I really appreciate it.

47 is still top 1% of the universe of stocks and I have tried to provide a list that covers a variety of industries and sectors. You will find 2-3 stocks in medical devices, maybe 4-5 stocks in industrial equipment and so on in this list. I could have broken up this list in multiple posts (as many sites do) with titles such as “Top 5 Stocks in Industrial Equipment Sector”, etc and that would not have raised any eyebrows. Perhaps it is a better idea to do 10 posts when 1 would suffice from the perspective of search engine traffic. I chose not to do so since I do want to provide spreadsheets, where I can, that my users can use to sort and filter according to their own criteria.

Re: the pop up, it is set to show only 1 time per visitor. I know you are a regular visitor and if you are seeing it again, this setting is not working. I will see what I can do to cut it down. It is not intended to be intrusive – just offer a convenient email delivery if the reader wants it.

I ought to say that when a company announces a dividend, publications that cover the stock market or businesses publicize the news to prospective investors.

The higher priority on the pecking order for dividends makes preferred especially enticing, not to mention that their yields are typically higher than those of common shares are. However, be warned that the high yields offered by these securities are accompanied by a number of risks.

High and growing dividend streams can be achieved with relatively low risk. There is no consistent relationship between risk levels of total returns and risk levels of dividends. Indeed, dividends can rise while total returns are falling.
